At the Masters National Championship in Dedham the best 250 (40+ runners) in the USA competed at the James Joyce 10K, with near ideal cool weather on a course that is fair but with rolling hills in the middle miles.
WSAC sent a stellar 40+ masters men's team that ran to an impressive 5th place finish among 12 National Teams. BAA took first place with the Altanta TC finishing second. Whirlaway Racing and the Central Mass Striders tied for 3rd, so WSAC kept good company!
WSAC 40+ team was led by Jake Stookey 41, who ran 33:59 to place 14th overall and 8th in this loaded age-group division. He was followed by Volker Burkowski 45, 36:04 and Bob Irwin 44, 36:29. Irwin had his best 10K performance in a few years, and Volker Burkowski finished 6th with a strong race in his 45-49 age-group.
The outstanding age-graded performance of the day went to Derrick Staley 58, who once again ran brilliantly when it mattered most...at Nationals! His time of 35:51 won his age-group by 1 minute and 3 seconds....and he fell just 4 seconds off the world class standard (90%+) with an AG ranking of 89.84%. It was the 3rd best AG performance among men at the championship event and provided a nice payday for DS. John Stadtlander 51, also ran a strong race 36:18 with a national class AG ranking of 83:47%, good for 12th in his 50-54 age-group.
In the separate Open 10K race.....Chuck Terry 34 finished 10th in 33:55 in a solid effort.
Congratulations to the WSAC men, who traveled to the James Joyce 10K today......and mixed it up at the National Championship with favorable results!
