As a youth, Andy was not a natural runner and was barely able to hold the 8th spot on his high school cross country team. After high school, he didn't run a step for more than 10 years. In 2001, he started riding and then racing mountain bikes in endurance events. In 2013, he started running seriously while training for his first marathon. His goal as a masters runner is to stay healthy, keep improving, and run times that are faster than he ran as a kid.
